OSStatus error -208

I have an RCA digital voice recorder. I knocked it off a counter while it was recording, the batteries popped out, and now I'm getting an error while trying to get QT to open the .WAV file: "Operation could not be completed. (OSStatus error -208.)" Any suggestions for salvaging? Thanks!

Hello ewcrump,

Are you sure you're not having the error -2008? That one states for "invalid media" what would mean your .WAV file could be corrupted or simply damaged. Please take a look at "Corrupt Audio Files: How to Repair" to get an idea about how to get back the file.

Error Code: -208

Error: badFileFormat

Description: File is corrupt or unusable

Based on your amplifying information, my guess would be that dropping the recorder while it was recording prematurely stopped or interrupted the recoding and the file now lacks a valid EOF (End of File) marker without which QT will not play the file.

Any suggestions for salvaging?

While I assume it might be theoretically possible to add a valid EOF using an app like Dumpster (or the newer Atom Inspector app), I personally do not know specifically how to find/calculate this modification and apply it in order to salvage the valid audio data actually available up to the point of corruntion.
