My Epson perfection 4870 isn't recognised by mountain lion

I've been running an Epson Perfection 4870 Photo scanner on an older iMac in Snow Leopard by firewire. I 've now got a new iMac running Mountain Lion and I migrated the data from the old Mac. As it no longer has firewire I hooked up the scanner using USB. The scanner doesn't seem to be communicating with the iMac and the software update says that there is no update available. Has anyone any ideas as to how I can get my scanner working again?

Download VueScan which does support your scanner.

Does Image Capture in your Applications folder 'see' the scanner?

Thanks, Paul. Yes it does but I don't think Image Capture is as precise as Epson Scan. I shall experiment

I think you will find VueScan an excellent piece of software that I have used with an Epson Perfection 1650 scanner.

If Epson has a compatible driver available that works with Mountain Lion then it would be at their support website or included in the most recent set of Epson drivers from Apple - Epson Printer Drivers v2.13 for OS X.

I agree with Kappy that VueScan is excellent software - I use it myself.

You can use it in demo mode to test flight it before committing to purchase.

Image Capture is great for Epson, and Epson now issues drivers that use Image Capture. Image Capture will take full advantage of the features of your Epson Scanner.

The old Epson software was using Rosetta, so it no longer works in Mountain Lion.

I haven't personally used VueScan, but I will give it a look as well.
