Gmail / Mail on iPad

Somme thons bizarre happening to my gmail. Hitherto, my gmail appeared , and was readable,in the Mail icon on the home screen. It now shows new mail, but nothing happens when I tap anywhere.

Is there a way to set up a gmail account so that mail comes only to it, and not to 'Mail' on the home screen?
