Restoring iWeb site - I've tried everything?

HI folks, (Old Toad and others),

I've been trying to restore a memorial website I did for my father. I have my domain.sites2 file. I have been searching through all of the varied responses and suggestions for days. I can get as far as seeing my actual page names show up in the strip on the left of iWeb, but when I click on one of the pages, the content is missing. Every single one of my pages = no content shown.

All I want to do is FTP it someplace else.

I'd even settle for viewing it only enough to copy it with screen captures.

When I show the package contents, I can see the assets in there. But, for the life of me, I cannot figure out how to get them to "link" back to the original webpages shown.

It's so frusrating to be this close.

I'm using iWeb 3.0.4

OS 10.7.5

I've tried lots of stuff. Much having to do with permissions:

  • sudo chown -R dhansel ~/Library/Application\ Support/iWeb/Domain.sites2
  • Get info and check permissions
  • etc.

any other ideas?

It's just killing me.

Thanks,

Doug

In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

To open your domain file in Lion or Mountain Lion or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.

do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"

delay 1

tell application "iWeb" to activate

You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.

Just launch the application, find and select the domain file in your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder that you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.

WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder. So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.

I've already got access to my library and domain.sites2 file. Not an issue there. I've got copies of it too.

So, I followed the above steps (again), remember, I've tried a lot of stuff. (I have the domain switch app as well as the iWebdrop app)

Following the steps above actually made things worse for me as now iWeb opens with zero UI shown. So, that took me backwards. No choice to make a new page either. Very hosed now, and having a hard time getting back where I was where I was actually seeing the iWeb UI and my web pages at least listed on the left.

Guess I'll go back to an original domains.sites2 file and start again and see if I can get back to where I was.

~/Library/Application\ Support/iWeb/Domain.sites2

The link to the domain file should be your ~/Application Support/iWeb/Domiain.sites2.

I'm not familar with Terminal commands the having the \ between Application and Support might give a false location so the iWeb Switch Domain application can't find your file. Unless that's a typo.

Make the library visible and check to make sure your domain file is in the correct folder. Then use iWeb Switch Domain to locate and select that file to open with iWeb.

Jan 27, 2013 7:42 PM in response to Old Toad

I copied that terminal command from another (Level 7 poster) copied below. If I remove the backslash, it doesn't find the folder anymore. Very curious looking I admit.

My Library is visible. Domain file is sitting right where it's supposed to be. Again, I can see pages listed, but the page content itself comes up blank to the right.

User uploaded file

iWeb Switch Domain doesn't get me anywhere further. I still have my pages listed to the left as the screenshot shows, but no content for any of them. Just a blank white area.

Thanks,

Doug

It sounds like the Domain "file" (which is actually a folder disguised as a file), and all the files it contains, may be owned by a different user and thus are not writeable by you. If you've still got a backup of the file, and good backups of your entire system in general, try this... open the Terminal (in /Applications/Utilities) and paste in the following command (assuming that you have placed this broken Domain file back in the proper place where iWeb looks for it):

sudo chown -R yourusername ~/Library/Application\ Support/iWeb/Domain.sites2

(Of course, you'll need to change "yourusername" to your actual username, but be very, very careful not to mess up the rest of the command! If you insert an extra space in the wrong place, you could do serious damage to your system!)

When you press return, you will be asked for your account password. Type it, being aware that nothing will show up when you type, and press return again. This will change the owner for the Domain file, as well as all the files/folders it contains, to your user.

Try the following:

1 - delete the iWeb preference file, com.apple.iWeb.plist, that resides in your

User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.

2 - delete iWeb's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your

User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).

User uploaded file

3 - launch iWeb and try again.

If that doesn't help continue with:

  1. move the domain file from your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder to the Desktop.
  2. launch iWeb, create a new test site, save the new domain file and close iWeb.
  3. go to the your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder and delete the new domain file.
  4. move your original domain file from the Desktop to the iWeb folder.
  5. launch iWeb and try again.

NOTE: if the domain files have different names you'll need to use the iWeb Switch Domain application to open the domain file.

Thanks for coming back and trying again Old Toad. I've been travelling on biz which made me unable to respond until now. So, tried both of those things to no avail. Again, it's very frustrating to be so close as to getting the pages listed on the left, but when I select one of them, it just doesn't link to any content at all.

User uploaded file

Really wishing there was a way to find out where iWeb is "looking" for these pages that it can't find them. Looking at the top of this thread, it appears that all the assets are in the folder package.

Feb 17, 2013 9:27 AM in response to dhansel

Copy the domain file to another user account on your Mac and see if you can open it there. You can leave it on the Desktop of the other account and use iWeb Switch Domain to select and open it. See if there's any change by going to a diffrerent or new user account.

Also you can open the domain package by Control-clicking on it and selecting Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. Check inside for files you've added to the web pages, i.e. photos, videos, etc., to see if they are there or not.

Feb 18, 2013 9:50 AM in response to Old Toad

If I simply copy my domain file to another user account and run it over there via iWeb Switch Domain, it will refuse to open anything at all. It will act like it's opening something, running the bar graph saying loading, but then it won't display a page or anything.

You may recall from earlier in the thread where I have to do all kinds of things, like SUDO CHOWN -r and such to permissions to get it to even open at the level I've managed to date.

Also, I can see a ton of files in "show package contents" which are visibile at the top of this thread. Jpgs, movies, etc. Not sure where iWeb stores the actual text info though.

Anyway, no dice unforntunately.

your domain.site2 should have a folder name as: domain-(uuid-number)

ie: domain-E235AFB2-4970-4B2F-A5AA-2DB777AAA126

this folder holds other folders that have xml files for each of your page, the xml files are what tie the pages to their assets.
