Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT
The mail stamp icon is no longer on my Home Screen. I have to open mail from Recents, and then I have to close it by Force Quit, since there isn't a close button. I would appreciate advice on how to get the icon back. ( I am posting this question for my 90 year old father ). Thanks.

It is an iMac, running iOS 10.4.3 I think.
Please check again what version of OS X (not iOS) it is running. If really 10.4.3, why have you not updated to the final version 10.4.11 of Tiger?
Sorry for the delay in responding. I just spoke with my father, and his OS is 10.4.11.

Drag the icon of Mail.app from the application folder to the Dock. That will create the required alias.
