I have deleted photos, but their thumbnail still shows up. Also, other deleted photos show up but there is no thumbnail under "Event" for the event.
It seems that deleted photos are not in synch with their thumbnails. is there a way to resynchronize the index file?

I deleted them by selecting them within their events, then Delete key. The trash displayed them, but when I Emptied the trash, the photos stayed there.
Just rebuilt the thumbnails completely. Still have "empty" events, and thumbnails in the trash that do not leave when I empty it.

I did rebuild it, but it did not resolve the issues:
1) There are still ghost thumbnails in the events
2) The event thumbnail is black
3) Deleting the "ghost" thumbnails does not remove them, they show up in Trash, and emptying the trash does not remove them. It freezes iPhoto.

I rebuilt again, this time checking boxes for rebuilding (long process vs short process), recovering orphaned photos. Rebuilding went smoothly, but the ghost thumbnails are still there, and there is still a problem with Trash. And iPhoto will not Quit. It does not hang - I can choose to do other things, but when I quit, it just waits, with the File menu highlighted.
download iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ - and use its rebuild command - this creates a totally new library so if you are not happy with it you can just go back to the current one

This program worked for me, and will help me with many other tasks (duplicates mainly!).
Thank you for the patient help. Not sure what happened with that original iPhoto file, but it was obviously corrupted.
That can be anything from user error to cosmic rays - things happen - which is why you must always have a good backup
