factory reset Time capsuale

I have a time capsual 1TB which I connected so far with a network kabel. I now want to use the wireless connection. I've a Fritzbox 7390 as a router. Unfortunately I an't see the TC anymore. Also configuring with the airport program is not possible. I tried factory reset: disconnect powerline - psuh the reset button on the backside and connect to power again. Unfortunetly this is also not working. Anyone has an idea how to facory reset correctly?

IMac, Mac OS X (10.6)

This will work.. it has to.. that is the way the TC is programmed. Hold in reset .. power on.. keep holding in reset until the front led flashes rapidly.. if it doesn't flash rapidly you are not holding in reset correctly.. or you have over pushed and bent the lever. When you push the reset you should feel the switch click on.. it is like a soft keyboard feel.

Try again..

If it fails.. plug it into a computer directly by ethernet and set the IP manually on the computer.. you might be able to access it.. was it set to bridge or router.. if no router is available it should return to a self generated address and you will be able to connect to it.

You need to change the TC to bridge mode.

If you can access the TC by ethernet then you are fine. You can reset from there, but that is not necessary.

I recommend you redo the setup using ethernet cable.

I would most strongly recommend you install 5.6 airport utility as v6 is both hard to use and lacks facilities.

There are plenty of methods.. here is mine.

How to load 5.6 into ML.

1. Download 5.6 for Lion.

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482

Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.

2. Download and install unpkg.

http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/

Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.

You cannot uninstall 6.1 so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.

For screen shots see this post.

Set the TC with all SMB names.. short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric.

Set wireless name at 5ghz differently to main 2.4ghz.

Use WPA2 Personal security as it is the only level that is designed for new N wireless.

Use a passkey of 8-12 characters pure alphanumeric.. you can use more if you are paranoid. It is seldom useful or necessary.

Go to the internet tab and change it to bridge mode.

Once you are finished update the TC.. and then it could be worth rebooting the whole network.. as certain devices will have the wrong IP now.

From off.. start the modem.. TC.. client devices.. 2min gap between each one.

It should work.. if the computer fails by wireless still give us a few screen shots of your TC wireless setup.. and the computer wireless setup.

It is a simple matter to change the configuration of your TC if you do not want to install additional software....although it is a good idea to have a full function utility like 5.6 installed on your Mac....as LaPastenague suggests.

Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility

Click on the TC icon, then click Edit

Click on the Network tab at the top of the next window

Adjust the setting for Router Mode to read "Off (Bridge Mode)"

Click the Update button at the lower right of the window and allow a minute for the TC to restart again

I first thought that I made a real progress, but unfortunately I can't get it to work. I'm working with a German language pack but I still get two error messages:

1. Not Internetconnection. In the discription it says: Apple Wifi has no valid IP Adress. When I go to bridge modus I get another 3 message telling me Eternet not connected.

2. No DNS Server

Stupid question. I have not networkkabel connected and only want to use the Wifi connection. Do I need a networkkabel for the installation?

Also I added two screen shotsUser uploaded file

Sorry for thath many stupid questions.

The Time Capsule must be permanently connected to your Fritzbox router with an Ethernet cable. LaPastenague's instructions assumed that you would be connecting the Time Capsule this way.

The Time Capsule would not be compatible with Fritzbox if you want to connect using wireless only and also have the Time Capsule provide a wireless signal.

Yes, you need to plug the TC into the Fritzbox with ethernet.

In bridge mode the TC is expecting to work as part of an existing network.

But when you do that, you can then access it directly by wireless.

If you want to access the TC by wireless and still have internet connection by wireless, this is the only way to do it.

I think we have been giving you answers but the question was perhaps not clear.

If you want the TC to be accessed without any network connection.. that is possible.. but the wireless client in the computer cannot link to two devices at once. You would need to choose internet via the Fritzbox or TC for Time Machine or whatever you are doing with it.

Tell us clearly what you are trying to do.

If you have no connection to the Fritzbox you will have no internet.. is this what you want.

You can setup the TC stand alone..

Put it back in router mode.. and just ignore all the errors.. You will need to set the wireless manually I think, as the Fritzbox probably puts out a very strong signal. If the TC is very close to the computer why not use ethernet.. it will be much faster.. but if you want wireless.. just do standard setup.

You then select the TC wireless instead of the fritzbox wireless. You should have no trouble connecting.. but the computer will have to use ethernet to the fritzbox to have internet. If you connect both you will need to set the IP manually in the computer.
