My iPhone 5 screen broke (only the glass)
Can the iPhone be repaired in an Apple store in China (Shanghai)? How much would it be? I bought the phone in Germany. Is that a problem?

They might. But you will need to get an out warranty replacement. Most stores are leery of touching phones purchased out of the country as the warranty is not international. Contact the Apple store in Shanghai.
Thanks for your answer. Does a broken screen fall under warranty (broken by myself)? Actually, it's only a small crack.
Alternatively, I could ask an unofficial repair center in Shanghai. Does anyone have experience with repair services in Shanghai?
No. That is accidental damage and NOT covered by the warrany. If an unofficial repaair center touches it and something goes wrong later, Apple will NEVER touch your phone again.
PS the out of warranty service exchanges your phone as Apple does not repair iphones; they exchange them. Again, go to the Apple store first before doing anything.
Can I get a OOW replacement outside the country of purchase? Bought it in Germany, but not returning anytime soon. I am in China now. I read online that some Apple stores do and some do not.
An official apple reseller in Shanghai offered me a screen replacement. Does this affect the warranty? Costs about 250$. Another non-official offered me to just replace the front glass for around $120. What would you suggest?
Shipping back to the country of origin is not an option.
The warranty is not international. You would have to take it back to Germany for service. And they do not accept international shipments, so you would have to take it in yourseld or send it to someone who would take it in for you.
Take it in to the Apple store to see if they give you the OOW. What have you got to loose? That's my suggestion.
I will give it a shot at the store.
Another question: Is the OOW exchange always possible? Even if the guarantee period is over?
Yes.
If a third-party service provider changes the glass only, am I still able to get an OOW exchange someday in the future?
Probably not, as it will have an unathorized part installed. Most third party service providers use cheap knock-offs as there is no legitamate way of getting genuine Apple parts on the market.
But then, why is it called out-of-warranty exchange? I mean they change almost completely broken phones as well.
Ok, but then a third-service provider exchange should be no problem IF that service doesn't cause inoperability. Is that true? So I might let the screen be replaced by a third-service provider and still get the OWW someday in the future if the phone still works fine.
Re-read the paragraph starting "Certain damage is ineligible for out-of-warranty service...".
The tech who examines your iPhone to determine if it is eligible will probably be able to tell that is has been repaired and that non Apple parts have been used.
Just my thoughts.
Do not go to a third party service provider. It might cause problems and headaches in the future which might end costing you more in the long run. W havee told you what we think you should do. But ultimately it's your choice.
Ok, went to one of the Apple stores in Shanghai today. They told me that they cannot exchange or repair it since it was bought in Germany. There are two more Apple stores in Shanghai. I might give it a shot there, but not very confident!
