Transfer purchases from iTunes to iPod

I Have purchased the new iPod touch 5th generation.

however I don't seemed to be able to download new purchases from iTunes or transfer existing purchases not it in the music section.

THe music says it is downloading and then shows an error message.

all the apps I have have transferred fine.

your assistance would be greatly appreciate.
