First Gen iPad that has not been updated. My photos are stuck on it. Help.

I have a first generation iPad that has never been updated. I transferred over 2000 photos to it from my PC as a way to have a backup if my PC died. Well my PC died. I now want to export the photos back to a new PC. The only way I have figured out to do this is by emailing 5 photos at a time to myself. I copy the photos in the email and paste them to a folder on my desk top. This is super slow. There must be a faster way. Anybody?

I looked into photo sharing apps and the OS that my iPad is currently using won't support the new apps. I attempted updating the OS but am afraid I may loose the photos during the update process but I dont really know. When I attempt an update I get a warning that states "update will delete all of the media, including iTunes store purchases. Any Ideas?
