Is iMessage & FaceTime free to use abroad?

Hello everyone, I am currently in the UK (United Kingdom). Earlier next month I will be going on a Spanish Exchange trip with college to Spain. I would like to stay in contact with my parents/friends over iMessage and FaceTime. Is it free to use these abroad without getting a HUGE bill? I've read on some other websites that you need a Wi-Fi signal to connect to and then you are able to use FaceTime and iMessage. Is this true? Has anyone had this experience abroad? I am going to visit the Apple Store next week to double check with the genius' that work there, but I would like to be sure from this website too.

Another question: Before I go abroad, what do I need to do on my iPhone to stop me from getting charged alot?

Thanks everyone!

Yes as long as you have wifi then iMessage will work fine to other imessage clients. You require a cellular connection to send to non-imessage clients. An iMessage client is somone else who has an i-device.

If you contact your carrier they may be able to sell you a reasonable package for Spain. Otherwise , turn the cellular data off (roaming data charges) and put your phone on airplane mode. Once in airplane mode you can turnteh wireless back on.

Hope this helps... best to contact your carrier for a plan.

Cheers
