When you connect your device to your PC, using the USB cable, it will recognize it as a camera. It will ask you if you want to offload or import your photos (accept) and then it will ask if you want to delete them from your device (accept).
Then you can start iTunes and do anyotehr syncing of music or do a back-up.

You have to give the computer a chance to recognize the device and install the drivers.
You can also use iCloud to automatically sync.
