I have tried a few of the suggestions on the Apple site. I have updated to the latest version of iTunes. Unfortunately I do not have another computer to try it out on. Not sure if there is anything else I can try, or if I'm just stuck with version 2.2.1???

This may indicate a hardware issue with your device. Follow Troubleshooting security software issues, and restore your device on a different known-good computer. If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.
The "device may need service" means a hardware problem. in that case make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.
So if I try to "restore your device on a different known-good computer" their computer wouldn't recognize my ipod, so how would that help for restoring? Would I have to install my device? would it effect their itunes in any way?
If you computer sees the iPod then your friends should. See the following to get that computer to see the iPod
