I am trying to plug a dell display through dvi and minid display adapator to my thunderbolt display which is plugged into my macbook pro, dell display is not getting a singal from the thunderbolt display why?

Mini DisplayPort displays and adapters don't work when plugged into a Thinderbolt display. See section 16 in:

However they will work if you connect a Thunderbolt disk drive (with two Thunderbolt ports) between the Thunderbolt display and the Mini DisplayPort device.
