Can a broken iPod's data be recovered?

My iPod has a sad iPod icon. The Genius bar told me that the iPod probably could not be fixed and that I should buy a new one. That is fine with me, but is there any way to get the music off of this broken iPod? Do iPods have removable hard drives like computers? My laptop with all of my music broke and the hard drive is too damaged to recover any of my data. The iPod was the only other place I had my music. Please tell me there is something I can do! Thanks.
