Can you use a password or pass code lock to lock and unlock a file on iMac?

I want to have a password to lock stuff on my computer, I have a password to log into my account but can I use a password to lock files and confidential documents from opening up if someone else wants to look at it?

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.1)

Just to expand on Niel's correct answer - there's no way to password a file in the Finder. (Some programs such as Word permit files to be passworded but that's under the program's control, not Finders.) The only way to protect files with passwords when the program creator doesn't do so it to put them into an encrypted folder.
