Is Admin Password Different from Master Password?

What is a master password and it is the same thing as admin password?

Or is master password different from admin?

When the FileVault asks for a password to unlock the hard drive,

what password is FileVault requesting?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

The master password can be the same or a different one than your administrator account. If you haven't set up a master password, it's your administrator account.


By default, FileVault asks for your administrator password on Lion and Mountain Lion. However, if you have forgotten it, you have to use a password that Apple provided you when you set up FileVault
