I'm getting this issue. I've had the computer for 2 weeks now. Not sure what the deal is. the most I'll leave a screen in one place is 10 minutes and I'll see the images burned in to the screen.
Anyone else?
MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.3), Partitioned with Win7 via Bootcamp
It seems to be only doing it in Windows 7 via bootcamp. Mac OS doesn't seem to have this issue.
I had the same issue (see picture). A re-install of Mountain Lion over the existing version fixed it. At the same time I had issues with iPhoto and Aperture not starting up.
To initiate a re-install:
Oops... correction. Re-install of ML did not solve the screen-problem, although iPhoto and Aperture work fine again.
I think this is a big issue and something needs to be done about this.

I'm pretty sure that Windows like OS X has a display sleep setting. 😉
Personally I set display sleep down to 10 minutes, that way if I get called away or distracted then the display will be spared by my inattentiveness.
Apple is falling apart before our eyes. On MacRumors there are 14 pages (and counting) discussing this image retention/persistence problem with the new iMacs. Time to sell my stock.
I have my new iMac i7 3,4 GHz for a week now. Yesterday, I noticed this effect the first time. I had "screen brightness automatic" and noticed that increased the brightness to maximum, since it was a sunny day and my room was very bright too. After some time, the IP vanished and I didnt see the ghost images again. I shall watch the effect very close now.
I'm having the same problem. My 2012 27-inch iMac is also in a sunny room, so my brightness is also usually turned all the way up. Testing my replacement iMac right now and so far it has a tiny bit of image retention but nothing like my initial iMac. The replacement iMac also has less edge bleed from the LEDs than my original iMac.
In january/february had 3 iMacs all had image percistance... First 2 were severe third was a lot less, but asked for a refund in the end.
Still lurking to the new iMacs tough, but i would hate it will show again... still on an old Macbook Pro 2008 so kind of need an upgrade to use Adobe CS6 ect in a nice way.
So how was your replacement? Does it have IR?
I spent so much time on researching and money on this brand new imac and I'm having ghosting issues? I hope they have a resolution for this quickly. I turned up the temperature in my office today and started having this issue, I'm not sure if it's related? For the money I spent on this computer this shouldnt even be an issue, especially after only 2 weeks of owning my mac.
