How to delete apps on my iphone 4s?

I would like to delete apps that my son put on my phone. How do I delet them?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

Hold the icon until the icons start jiggling. Delete by pressing the cross that appears top left of the icon. Stop the jiggling by pressing the home button.

How can I delete apps without holding down the icon? I have two apps that won't update on my home screen and I can't delete them, but I want to. And holding down the icon isn't working.
