we have a 4 generation ipod touch 8gb software is at 4.2 and i can not update to a new version, why?

we have a 4th generation ipod touch, 8gb and the software is 4.2, who do i update the software? the pc says its update and the ipod doesn't have a software update button. please help

You appear to have a second generation iPod touch, which can't be updated past 4.2.1.

Thank you I have just check the model number on the back of the ipod, why cant you update them?
