Perfect 17"

Just wanted to say I picked mine up today from the Apple Store and my first take is that it runs flawlessly. I had the 15" MBP and had the whining issues; this has none. Everything looks and sounds perfect. the screen real estate allows me to keep two documents side-by-side, which is good because I do a lot of editing. What a machine!

Wow great to hear! I've been holding out on a MBP purchase until the 17" reviews start to pop-up, (I thought it would be best after the 15" issues) and you guys have just about convinced me to just order mine now. I think I'll give it another week though and keep reading feedback just to be safe because I have no local Apple store to return a defective one to.

Should the battery be drained - or fully charged - before resetting the PMU?

The “Power Management Unit.” It can be reset,
sometimes to good effect w.r.t. low-level symptoms
such as battery charging anomalies or temperature
regulation problems, by powering down, removing the
battery and holding down the power button for at
least five seconds, then replacing the battery and
starting up again.

Just a little perspective

My MBP 15" has whine (not on AC) and gets pretty warm (not too hot though)on AC.

So when on a desk on AC it is fine as heat is non-issue and there's no whine. But with the 15" on battery and in my lap it's very comfortable as anything over that weight is not ( I had a Dell D800 and it was nice but just a bit heavy for the lap (around 7 lbs). The only problem is a low whine-so what.

Now the 17's supposedly have no whine and less heat but with these using is on the lap is not going to be comfortable-ever,As with carrying it.

choices. But certainly both are pretty nice eah? 🙂

Well, I've been up and running for over 24 hours on the machine. It's as quiet as can be, but man is it hot. Like you could fry an egg on it hot. I replaced an G4 Powerbook Titanium which never got nearly this hot. Should I be worried (about the machine... I'm definitely worried about my lap)?

I have tried the trick someone mentioned about the power setting, but it's too early to see results. I can't imagine running this hot is good for the computer.

I have been running my MBPRO 17 with 100 GB 7200 RPM drive since yesterday, and so far it has preformed just about perfectly - slightly warm on the bottom, cool on the top, no noise whatsoever and the screen is consistently bright from corner to corner.
I have loaded the Adobe Creative Suite 2 Premium (Mac version) and have done some Photoshop work with InDesign and Bridge open simultaneously. Photoshop is a little slow (as expected with Rosetta). For what its worth the entire Creative Suite install took 29 minutes (the instructions said it might take 20 minutes depending upon your computer(?)).
I have also loaded and used iWork 06 with no problems and have tested the Airport card at several bagel and coffee shops, again with no problems.
This is my first MAC and I Think I'm in Love.
