How do I import mpg files into Final Cut Express? I have OS X Mountain Lion.

I am trying to import a video file that was recorded on a Sony HDD DCR-SR40 Handycam into Final Cut Express and I am having no luck. The file is in .mpg format. I am running OS X Mountain Lion.

How do I convert the file to something that Final Cut Express can recognise?
