how come Apple Earbuds do not work with ipod shuffle 3rd gen?

I recently purchased Apple Earbuds, expecting them to work with my ipod shuffle 3rd gen because they have the volume control and such as the older headphones, and theyre made by apple. However they do not function with the shuffle. Is there any fix to this? Could an update be released or something?
