My early 2011 macbook pro goes to sleep on its own in the middle of whatever I'm doing. It's done it maybe four times in the last few days. I can get it to wake by pressing the power button. It's running Lion. I'm not very computer-literate... Can anyone suggest a cause or a solution?

As for what's happening, double check that the only thing hooked up to the computer is power. Then see what your Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Energy Saver and Security Settings have to say about when it goes to sleep.
Yes, I have Apple Care. Should I just call them? It's just plugged into power. I have the macbook to go to sleep after 3 hours (I generally just close the lid or shut it down if it's not in use).
Try the SMC suggestion, and if it fails, also try to run the hardware test:

I would also turn that off, this could be a problem.
For now set it to never and see the results.
I tried the SMC reset but it has just happened again. This time I waited to see what would happen if I didn't press anything - it went to the black sleep screen, and then seemed to restart itself and came back up on the user login screen without me having to press the power button. Should I try the hardware test?

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste (command-V) into the Terminal window. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.

I should say that after I tried the SMC reset, I spoke to a guy from AppleCare who got me to do the parameter RAM thing... I've had my macbook on with no problems since then but then it was not a regular occurring problem, it just happened intermittently.
Update this thread if it happens again.
