If I import an 82GB library via homesharing WiFi will the audio quality be the same? Ballpark, how long will that take?

I'm transferring an 82GB iTunes library from a 2005 iMac to a 2008 Intel duo core iMac. I discovered the button on the bottom right in Homeshare! Will the audio quality be equal to the originals if I use the WiFi on a first-generation Time Capsule? Is this going to take me days and days? Would it go faster if I hook the two up together somehow?

At the moment both are still OS 10.5-something and I'm still using iTunes 10.6-something. I am then going to upgrade the 2008 iMac to Snow Leopard and I guess Mountain Lion so that I can get iTunes 10.7 because currently my new iPhone 5 can't sync with iTunes and all the stuff I will want to hear is on the older iMac.

I really appreciate anyone who can help me out! Thanks!

It will take a while using wifi. If you use an ethernet cable between your iMac and Macbook pro it would be 3 times faster than wifi.

Personally I would just use finder to copy the

username/Music/iTunes folder over to Username/Music on your laptop. Then your playlists come over as well

Oh wow, that's great! That sounds like it's instantaneous. It's two iMacs, not a Macbook pro, but I assume it would work the same way? So when they're hooked up with the ethernet cable does each computer display the other's finder? How exactly do I copy the one computer's folder to the other computer? (I feel like Owen Wilson in Zoolander!)

I'm going to get the two computers hooked up now and hope to figure it out, but I've never actually had the two hooked up like that so if you (or anyone else) can explain that step, I'd really appreciate it!

Thanks so much!

Switch of wifi from the source computer to force it to use the ethernet

If you connect the two machines with an ether net cable and look in finder you will see

User uploaded file

Click on the other machine and you will be asked to connect. Enter the Username and password for the other machine. (ie the one you logon to the mac with)

Then you will see the file structure for that machine. I have highlighted the itunes folder drag this to your Music folder and it will not be instantaneous probably about 2 cups of coffee but it will be quicker than wifi

Then when you are done eject the other machine from your computer, Click on the eject arrow next to the machine name. Then you can unplug the ethernet cable and switch wifi back on on your other machine

Two cups of coffee would be brilliant! I'm looking at the "Shared" section in the finder of the older iMac and it just has my Time Capsule, not the other iMac. Do I have to set it up somehow to share? How do I do that? They were both connected to the internet from the same Time Capsule, of course, but other than Home Sharing in iTunes, I'd never had them connected or sharing anything.

And if I've still got you, how do I turn off Wi-Fi?

I should know these things! Thanks so much for your help.

To be clear, I've got them hooked up side by side with the ethernet cable and restarted both computers. Each computer's finder "Shared" section shows the Time Capsule, but neither shows the other computer. And for the record, the time capsule has only ever been used to back up the older iMac, the newer one has not been connected from the standpoint of backups, just to access the WiFi.

Thinking about it more, maybe I'm asking the wrong question.

I clicked on the "Time Capsule" in the "Shared" section of the finder on the newer iMac and it said "Connection Failed" and has a button "Connect As..."

If I connect the newer iMac by ethernet cable to the Time Capsule, will I be able to set it up in such a way that I can drag the iTunes folder from the Time Capsule's backup of the older computer into the newer computer?

So on the newer machine, I'm connected to the older machine as Guest and see a "Public Folder" inside of which is a "Drop Box."

On the older machine, I'm getting "Connection Failed," but it would be the newer machine that I would be rummaging through the folder of the older machine anyway, right? But how do I get the iTunes folder to come up?

When I tried to connect from the old machine to the newer machine in the "Shared" box I got "Connection failed—The server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and your network connection and try again. You had told me to shut off WiFi, that's got to be the problem, right? How do I shut off WiFi?

If I import an 82GB library via homesharing WiFi will the audio quality be the same? Ballpark, how long will that take?
