when connecting a thunderbolt to hdmi adapter to my tv with an hdmi cable i dont get any video or audio

i have a macbook pro that i want to connect to my tv .i purchased a thunderbolt to hdmi adapter and connected to my tv's hdmi port and i get nothing

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)
