MacBook Pro 13inch i7 2012 keeps pausing whilst loading

Hi,

I've had my brand new MacBook Pro 13inch 2.9GHz i7 8gb ram Mid-2012 model since around Sept/October time and I have had absolutely no problems with it. I am an experienced mac user and after the issues I've had before, I have taken extra special care with this macbook and have loved using every minute of it (almost everyday every second I'm awake!).

Anyhow, so yesterday I noticed that the loading of applications or just openning tabs inside of safari it was causing my macbook to hang for a little while, including watching movies in VLC player.

I did a disk verify and nothing was wrong, then I did a verify disk permissions and got the following;

2013-01-28 10:01:58 +0800: Verifying permissions for “Macintosh HD”

I then proceeded with restarting the machine just to keep the machine a little fresh, but soon enough after restart I started having the same issues again. I ran verify disk permisions and there wasn't any more errors so could proceed to look there.

I then ran activity monitor and everything looked fine, however everynow and then when the computer would hang I would be almost hung completely except for moving between the screens.

I'm really stuck on how to fix this, can anyone help please? It's unusual and is starting to get frustrating as I need to sit and wait a couple of minutes every now and then before continuing to use my MacBook.

You're under warranty - take the machine into your local Apple Store or an AASP and have them run diagnostic tests on the machine. I'm sure that the first thing that they will recommend is reinstalling OS X. You can save some time by going ahead and doing that by holding down the Command and R keys whilst booting, and then electing to reinstall the OS anew. It won't be a clean install, but it will be a fresh install.

Before you do that, however, you might want to check to see if you've any third-party kexts that may be causing problems. In Terminal, copy and paste:

kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'

...and then hit Return. Post any output from Terminal in a reply here.

Good luck,

Clinton

No telling where the kext is stored - usually they're in your root System>Library>Extensions folder, but different applications may place them elsewhere. Download the free "EasyFind" from the App Store and search for terms such as "soundflower" or "cycling74" - that should find it.

I'm about 90% certain that's your problem.

Your friend for finding system stuff is the System Profiler, aka "System Information", found in the Utilities folder. In the Software/Extensions section you can locate the desired item. May need to double-click the Extensions label to get it to update the list. There you will find that kernel extensions are kept exclusively in /System/Library/Extensions and have a .kext suffix. If you take such a file out of that folder and restart, it will not be loaded.

Be sure to positively identify which one is the errant kext before moving anything. Else you will be shooting self in foot.

OK I managed to remove it using the uninstaller for SoundFlower.

Ran the terminal code again and this time nothing appeared.

One thing I noticed is that now when watching movies they suddenly pause for a little while - this is like all of the apps I run, everything pauses for a moment and then after a minute or two of patience everything starts running again.

Does this mean that it's perhaps some background process?

Here is my activity manager screens;

So I really can't do much now without it freezing. I was reading through this discussion and saw where I can see the logs. I noticed this;

Ok and today it didn't boot so I went to system recovery mode 'cmd-r' and did a disk repair.

In disk repair it told me that the partition map needed to repair the EFI system, so I hit repair and it went well :)

Then I hit verify disk on the Macintosh HD, which was actually I available :/ I hit verify disk and its come up;

Incorrect block count for file 0.indexDirectory

(It should be 5056 instead of 2528)

It's now stuck verifying volume that is currently saying estimated 6 hours time.

Anyone know what caused this and if they can help please? :/

I think that, at this point, it's worth visiting your local Apple Store or an AASP. I've no idea why you're getting an estimated 6 hours to repair a block count... and I'm wondering if the disk is actually going to be successfully repaired or not.

You've wasted too much time trying to 'fix' a machine that's still under warranty - take it to the Apple techs and let them fix the underlying problem.

Good luck,

Clinton

So I took it to the apple store and unfortunately the Hard Disk is defective. According to the Apple professionals, it is a factory defect and I was just unlucky to have the disk. Fortunately they were able to save all of my files, so if anyone else is to be as unlucky as me then try not to have too much of a heart attack as you will probably be able to save your files :)

Thanks all for the help!
