My MacBook Pro will only recognize 2-ch of audio output with my SONY TV. Shouldn't it be able to allow 8-ch?

I've messed with the Audio MIDI Setup and it will not give me the option to configure any more than two channels.

MacBook Pro (13-inch Early 2011), Mac OS X (10.7.5)
