MBP mid-2012 freezes every 30 seconds

My MBP mid-2012, non-retina display, freezes up for 30 seconds every 30 minutes form the time of start-up. This goes on for the entire day. It hapeens regardless of what software is on at the time. I suspect that it may be either my Lacie HD (used w/TM) or my old Apply display. Has anyone experienced this and how did you fix it?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Have you tried using the machine for a couple of hours without any peripherals attached? I would think that would eliminate the question of whether it's a external drive/display issue. If it happens with no peripherals connected, then take advantage of your Apple warranty and take the machine to an Apple Store or an AASP.

Good luck,
