Q: iWork, iPad, & iCloud.com

If I have purchased Numbers for my iPad, can I simply create number docs (on my iPad), have them saved to the iCloud, and then access these docs from 'any' computer or do I need to have the Numbers software installed on that computer? I only ask this because I have created some Number docs on my iPad but when I visit icloud.com and navigate to iWork, there is an information page that only refers me to 'Learn More' or ' Get the software now'??? The weird thing is that the computer I am using (a friend's macbook) does have Numbers installed on it!

Yes, you need the program to open the documents, just as you would if you (for example) transferred them between Macs using a USB stick or a local network connection. Mountain Lion has automatic updating of the documents; on Lion you have to download them to your Mac from the iCloud website; but in all cases you need to have the program on any machine you want to use.

You don't have to purchase the programs for every machine or device; the iOS version can be downloaded onto all iOS devices once purchased, and the Mac versions can be downloaded onto any Mac once purchased; but the Mac version can't be used on an iOS device and vice versa.

Though there are older versions of the iWork programs on DVD you need the most recent versions to get the full facilities with Mountain Lion.

Thanks Roger. The Numbers software is on my friends macbook and it still does not work so I am starting to think that the problem may lay on the configurations of my iPad with the iCloud settings.

Your friend's Macbook would need Lion 10.7.5 as minimum; your iPad requires iOS5 or 6.
