can i delete pkg files
I seem to be low on space.
In the Library directory and UPDATES can I delete PKG files.....I beleive I opened and updated...some goes a few years back

On that folder, Software Update stores all your updates installer. You can delete them without any problem and you will get free space on your hard drive
Thanks for the quick response. just to be clear I can delete the library/update PKG and DIST extensions and whatever directory it sits in under UPDATES
To be on the safe side DO NOT DELETE the RECEIPT PKG files correct.

You can delete everything on /Library/Updates as they are just installers, but you shouldn't delete "ProductMetadata.plist"
Thanks a lot....one silly question is productMetadata.plist in the library/udpates file? So I should just be aware and not delete that correct.

ProductMetadata.plist is on /Library/Updates. That file contains some hardware that, when you connect to your Mac, Software Update asks you to install the driver from Apple automatically, so it's important to not delete that file
