HP laserjet 5000

I'm unable to print from a new Macbook Pro to an HP laserjet 5000. HP tech support was no help. When I go to the "add printer" area, no printers pull up. What do I need to do to be able to print from the new mac?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

You all are great with your quickness to reply!

I've just downloaded the software but it still doesn't recognize the printer.

As far as the printer cord, it's a printer network cord, not a USB. That's how it worked on my older (now dead) macbook pro. Do you know if a USB cord is required for the newer software?

1) At the printer. Press the Menu button to the right once so the display reads, "Information Menu". Press the Item button twice to the right so the display reads, "Print Configuration". Press the Select button. The printer will kick out two sheets. On the first page under the "Printer Information" heading is the IP address for your printer. It's the second entry from the bottom labeled, "HP JetSend Address: ip: 192.168.5.6 (your actual address will of course be different).

2) In the "Print & Fax" heading of the System Preferences, remove any entries for the 5000. Click the Add button and then the IP button. Under the Protocol pull down menu, choose "HP Jet Direct - Socket". Under "Address:", enter the IP address on your printout, like my example of 192.168.5.6. Under "Name:", put in something meaningful, like "HP LaserJet 5000N". Assuming you have the PPD installed, then under "Print Using:' choose "HP LaserJet 5000 Series". Click the Add button.

It's taken me a few days, multiple calls, and a couple trips to Best Buy, but thanks to the above suggestions, I can now print to my printer. Here's what it took in case others run into the same situation.

1. I did need to download the software. Do it as explained above.

2. I called HP which was a waste of 45 minutes. Don't bother doing that. You'll end up frustrated. They finally suggested that I purchase a new printer (however I knew the printer worked fine).

3. Follow the steps listed for the obtaining IP address. Get a print out of that as you'll need it.

4. It did require a different cable than before, which was suggested above. Note that I first purchased a serial to USB cable. Not only did that connection not work, the cord was only 5 inches long (which the sales person didn't tell me and I didn't catch that on the box). This meant that I had to hold my laptop at the back of the printer while attempting to print--the cord was too short to even put the laptop on the table with the printer.

5. Went back to the store for a parallel to USB cable.

6. Meanwhile, called Apple tech support. They were awesome. They walked me through it, using the information on the printout. They had me hook up the parallel to USB cable and the printer instantly printed.

7. About the cables. If you want to wait a few days, order it on Amazon.com, which listed the same cable for more than $20 less than Best Buy, and it has free shipping from Amazon.

Thanks to everyone for helping me figure out what to do to be able to print!

The printer did have a Ethernet connection and so thanks for the router info in case I run into another problem in the future. As far as cables, the ones in the store were $35-40 and I found the same parallel to USB was $14.99 on Amazon (same brand, same length). Others were available in the $10-12 range. So if time allows, you can order it online to save money. Or check out the router suggestion.

Greetings all,

Thanks for the advice above: Here's how I got my HP 5000 to print.

I got the Parallel to USB cable (1284 IEEE 36 pin) 36" long. A USB 'extension' cord 25'. I got both of these brand new on ebay, cost next to nothing and free shipping to boot.

I hooked the Parallel port via the USB cord into my 27" imac. I needed to keep my either net cable connected also (?). Don't ask me why but when I removed the eithernet cable I couldn't get the printer to work!

Follow the above info for getting the IP address, correct drivers, and procedure for adding the printer.

Worked like a champ.

Thanks again for the previous support, otherwise, I would not have known where to begin.

Peace
