Importing music files to iTunes

How do you import a music file from a "music" folder residing in finder to the iTunes library?

I have tried dragging and dropping and even though a plus sign showed, I could not find the song. I have tried with albums and songs.

Is it because of the format of the song? Or is there a certain import function that needs to be used?

The songs were imported to my PC from a CD and then transferred to the music file in finder by using a flash drive.

Help! I am trying to update my iTunes to contain all my music so I can use it for my slideshows, etc.

I have a MAC with OSX 10.8.2.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

I was having this problem, any file I added was not showing up in my library. It was showing up in the Recently Added playlist but was not in my actua library. Here's how I fixed it:

Go to ITunes > Preferenced > Advanced

Notice where your Itunes Media directory is...

quit ITunes, and delete the entire Itunes folder and all the files associted (MAKE SURE YOUR MUSIC FILES ARE COPIED SOMEWHERE ELSE THOUGH)

then restart itunes, dont change any settings, and go to file > add music

This worked for me, after I added my files I tweaked the settings like Don't copy to itunes media, turn off cloud purchases, etc.
