WON'T CONNECT

I have a 1st generation ipod shuffle that has the USB connector on the unit itself and when I connect it to the laptop, it shows as a drive in Windows 7 explorer but itunes doesn't show it as a connected device.

What can I do to fix this? I've changed the drive letter and also uninstalled then reinstalled itunes..
