Q: I now have to set up an appointment in an almost empty Apple store just to ask a "Genius" a question?!?

Ok... I walk into an apple store... tons of Geniuses standing around doing nothing. Instead of answering a question, they hand you a business card and tell you to set up an appointment?  Seriously?

I just want to know if I can still get my G4s repaired, or am I out of luck.

I don't know your store. In my store, at any given time there are perhaps 5 or 6 "geniuses" working the genius bar and about 20 - not kidding - others who are sales people and general helpers who can help with routine sales type questions, but are not at the genius level. Those folk who seem to be just "standing around", I think are working at their skill level. I wouldn't want someone who is not at that level to pretend to be a "genius".

Sorry, but most likely out of luck, as the G4 is obsolete.

Obsolete products are those that were discontinued more than seven years ago. Apple has discontinued all hardware service for obsolete products with no exceptions. Service providers cannot order parts for obsolete products. These include ALL G4 models.

G4’s are too old. The Apple Stores will not service any of the G series Macs.

You might have better luck if you have an authorized Apple reseller/repair center as these type of businesses deal with older, used Macs and maybe able to repair your G4.

If not, you may need to do the repair, yourself or if you know a more savvy Mac user that had or has an older G4 to help you out with the repair.

What exactly is wrong with your G4.

We might be able to advise you and point you into the right directions.
