VGA adapter

I have an older Late 2009 Macbook, Unfortunately the screen has bit the dust. However I would much like to use the computer as it turns on without any problem. My question to the community is can I use the VGA with a non-mac CRT Display? I understand that the screen is old, however it currently is the only display I have at my disposle until I find a much nicer screen or have enough to purchase a screen replacement kit.

Any suggestions, input is greatly appreciated.
