5.2 update stuck on Step 1

I started the 5.2 update about 90 minutes ago and it's still stuck 3/4 of the way through the Step 1 progress bar. I'm installing over wifi, and my connection is solid and fast. This is the first update I've run since we bought it last month, so I'm not sure what to expect, but browsing threads for previous updates suggests that this is a rather long time.

Is this normal? And if not, what steps should I take to avoid hosing the thing and having to start fresh via mini USB?

After no movement for well over two hours, mine suddenly skipped the rest of the progess bar, popped to Step 2, and zoomed through it with an auto-reboot along the way. Ten minutes later, it's updated and working perfectly.

So, to answer my own question—and ideally yours as well—waiting it out seems to be the answer.

(To any Apple employees wandering through, it would be awfully lovely to have a warning about time required at the beginning of the update to avoid these questions/panics. 😍)

I had the exact same problem. However I reset my AT2 by pressing Menu and Down until the light on the front started to rapidly flash. It rebooted ok as I guess it only got stuck during the prepping stage before the update was applied. Anyhow attempted to update it again and it went through ok, a bit slow but much quicker than the first time around

THANKS !

Updating to 5.2 on my AT2 also hung in step 1 for an hour so I used your Menu + down arrow to restart and on the second attempt to update went through step 1 much faster and did step 2 in a reasonable time and then rebooted. It was usinf an ethernetq connection.

Wonder if rebooting BEFORE updating might be a good practice?

Pulled the plug. Once the ATV came back up, I did a restart from the general menu. After the ATV came back up from the restart, I ran the update again with out issue.

Same issue as original poster. AT3 Stuck at 4/5ths complete on the screen that says "Step 1 of 2: Preparing update... Do not unplug your Apple TV while updating." Gave it well over an hour to resolve and then pulled the plug.

Left it unplugged for a minute, restarted, this time, no problem with the update (that I see so far but have read about other problems people are having with remote apps).

At least these problems don't appear to be bricking it this time and the fix is relatively painless.

Pressing menu plus down arrow on remote worked for me. Thanks for good advice.

Yes, resetting via menu plus down arrow worked for me too. I had waited 2 hours at 3/4 update and after a reset it raced right through. Wish I looked this up sooner.
