Songs have exclamation points

I have an iphone 4s (currently synced with an older mac desktop that has not been turned on in ages). I just bought a macbook pro. My photos and tv shows synced just fine but having issues with the music. I backed up the phone to the new macbook, thinking the songs on the phone (only a portion of my music library) would transfer to the laptop...but seems that did not happen. They are listed in there but they are greyed out and the little icloud symbol in this new itunes looks as if it's trying to load...no songs are importing or loading. When you try to play, they do not and a little exclamation point comes up. It seems as though they are trying to connect through icloud, but I don't want them to do that...in my itunes when I plug it, I make sure it says back up to this computer and nothing is automatic...
