Thunderbolt with MB Air

I just bought a Thunderbolt display to use with my MacBook Air and I am having problems setting it up. I can get the display to work in the "mirror" mode and the cover open but not with the cover closed. Any suggestions?

MacBook & iMac, Mac OS X (10.0.x)
