Step 6 is where things fail.

iTunes downloads iOS 6.1 but as soon as it finishes the download disappears and I am returned to a screen that says "iPod recovery mode."

Any ideas, or programs that can do what iTunes isn't? I have the 936.6MB "iPod5,1_6.1_10B141_Restore.ipsw" on my desktop in case I need it.

I have the latest iTunes (11.0.1) and a 32gb black 5th generation iTouch, I'm running Mountain Lion.

Thanks for you time 😟

Maybe:

Restore loop (being prompted to restore again after a restore successfully completes)

Troubleshoot your USB connection. If the issue persists, out-of-date or incorrectly configured third-party security software may be causing this issue. Please follow Troubleshooting security software issues. .

Next try placing in DFU mode and then restoring.

Then try restoring on another computer.

Last, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

I figured it out! I called Apple and they were nice and fast and no help 😝

So I took to the fourms and I found one guy's comment on a similar issue and he said to check out a free app called TinyUmbrella.

I downloaded it, ran the program and clicked a few buttons and TA-DA! it's back

Thank goodness!
