Why does my Macbook air not have a trash mailbox?

Why does my Macbook air not have a trash mailbox?

I have just set up a new Macbook Air, but Mail does not seem to have a 'trash' mailbox. I have deleted some messages, but they have disappeared totally.

iPhoto '11, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Mailbox Behaviors

What do you have under "Trash" there?

I have 'move deleted messages to the trash mailbox'. However, the trash mailbox has 'miraculously' appeared.
