Volume icon suddenly appears on screen

My ipad volume icon appears suddenly on screen and stays there unless I press the lower button of the volume button down. I checked settings but everything is working....I can not turn up the volume using the volume side button.... only the minimizing sound button works.... is it hardware problem...my ipad did not fall or anything and it has just been with me for 2 months...
