Q: How do I look inside the Fixed Layout Example provided by Apple

I want to look inside the "FixedLayoutExample3-0.epub" to better understand the xhtml and CSS content of the example book. I know that the .epub is a zip of various directories which are all described in the Asset Guide and other documents. But I cannot open it up. Double clicking takes me into the Application Loader - which I makes sense I suppose. But I can't do anything else with the file. I tried renaming it to .zip and using unzippers (izip and UnZipper) but neither worked. I read that Pages can't open a .epub. So how do I use it?

 

Sorry if this is terribly obvious but I can't seem to find infomation anywhere and I am now wondering if it has to do with how I set up my iTunesConnect account (i.e. for Free Books). Maybe Apple figure if you're not smart enough to open the file, you're not going to be able to figure out how to publish an eBook anyway but trying to use this "Resource" is pretty frustrating.

You are right, something messed up there.

 

Instead put the zip file in your Home folder (Finder > Go > Home) and then open Terminal.app in Applications/Utilities and type "unzip filename.zip"  (no quotes).   You might want to rename the file to something short like fle3.zip before doing this to make it easier to type the command.

    Normally on a Mac you do not use an "unzipper".  You just double click on the file AFTER you have changed the extension to .zip.  What happens when you do that?   The files inside you would read with TextEdit or TextWrangler, etc.

    I am on a Mac (should have mentioned that).  After changing the file extension from .epub to .zip in the finder. Double click on "FixedLayoutExample3-0.zip produces another file:

     

    • FixedLayoutExample3-0.zip  --> FixedLayoutExample3-0 2.zip

     

    Double clicking on that:

     

    • FixedLayoutExample3-0 2.zip --> FixedLayoutExample3-0 2.zip.cpgz

     

    Double clicking on that:

     

    • FixedLayoutExample3-0 2.zip.cpgz --> FixedLayoutExample3-0 2 2.zip

     

    ... and so on. I never get to see the source files.

    Thanks Tom,

     

    that worked. I have no idea why my automatic unzip isn't working - I tried it on my old MacBook just now and it worked fine.

     

    Anyway, I've got what I needed. Thanks again.

    I do this:

    $ unzip ./fixed.zip

    Archive:  fixed.zip

      End-of-central-directory signature not found.  Either this file is not

      a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive.  In the

      latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on

      the last disk(s) of this archive.

    unzip:  cannot find zipfile directory in one of fixed.zip or

            fixed.zip.zip, and cannot find fixed.zip.ZIP, period.

    Re the Fixed layout EPUB exampl 3.0, I should have mentioned I'm on a MAC mini running  OSX 10.8.2 (Mountain Lion)

    No need to run Terminal. Download the two AppleScripts available on this forum post:

    One is called EPUB_UnZip and the other is EPUB_Zip. Put them on the desktop or drag them onto your Finder sidebar. Then to unzip an EPUB, drag-drop it on top of the EPUB_UnZipscript. After you've created or edited an EPUB, drag the parent folder onto EPUB_Zip.
