Q: why is the mail application so unreliable?

I have made my move to a Mac laptop this year after being overrun with iOS devices in my house. The MacBook Air I have is an awesome machine. One of the main things I got it for is for business productivity. The simplest of things I should be able to do is communicate over email, but the native mail application is so unreliable it is embarrassing. I have a yahoo account that I was able to setup fine enough. Every time I send an email it is a gamble as to whether or not it is sent or not. That is unacceptable. The mail accounts I setup on my iOS devices seem to be bulletproof and it boggles my mind that the mail client on the Mac OS is so bad. I wasted time with the support lines on several occassions and all they could tell me is tht sometimes after I send an emal it can get stuck in between sending and getting off the yahoo server so there is no record it has been sent and no copy in drafts. What an awful answer. It has gotten to the point where the only way I am confident to use email is on my iPhone or through the web browser on the yahoo site. I am really unhappy about this and would like to know if other people see the same problem.

Yahoo does not support client access unless you have a paid (Yahoo +) account.

    Do you?

As far as I know I've nothing to do with Yahoo, tho one never knows these days. Is there some reason I would need Yahoo to get mail from a gmail and a local server account?

I was not replying to you, if you don't have Yahoo, you don't have Yahoo problems.

I have an account on my server, Grande Communications of central Texas, and a gmail account, both of which were working satisfactorily until this past year when I started using the Macbook Pros.

Post the settings in use for Gmail, unfortunately I have not been able to locate Grande's settings (is this in use with your own domain name) so you'll need to contact them to get the correct settings.

Sorry, I don't understand this request. I've checked the settings on my computer with Grande time and again and been told they are correct. Are you asking me to post them here? Could you be more specific? Your effort to help appreciated -- just need to understand what you need.

I don't have the correct settings for Grande so posting them here is no use, I have nothing to compare them with. But if you post the settings you use for Gmail I can tell you if they are correct, or not.

And is Grande hosting your domain name, and is it being used for your email address?

My gmail address is set to forward to the Grande account. Looking at the preferences, I see the gmail is no longer listed with "accounts" though it was a few months ago. I was receiving mail through both addresses and sending through the Grande address until two days ago. The last file I tried to send was an email with 3 pdf attachments totaling 624K -- that's when it quit working. Was still receiving messages to both addresses for awhile but the next day I lost that ability as well. Now nothing in or out.

I no longer have a domain name -- it's just an email address on the Grande server.

Remove the account and put it back, consider reversing your system so that Grande mail forwards to Gmail and then you can leave the Grande account out of your mail client.

If the Grande mail is a POP system (which I suspect it is) backup before the removal.

Ensure that Gmail is setup as an iImap account, not POP.

I have not been able to locate Grande's settings (is this in use with your own domain name) so you'll need to contact them to get the correct settings.

    From Google:

    Additional info from Google:

    * Set your email program to use the submission protocol (port 587/tcp) in your outgoing (SMTP) server settings. When you send mail for the first time, you will be prompted for your Grande username and password. Enter (and save) it the same way you would when configuring for receiving mail (lower-case username with no @ signs)

    * Set your email program to use the SMTP over SSL or encrypted SMTP authentication (port 465/tcp) on outgoing server mail.mygrande.net (if you use mail.grandecom.net you may get a certificate warning which can be safely confirmed as an exception within your mail client if you wish.) Again, you will be prompted for your Grande username and password when sending for the first time.

Good advice, for the OP, about switching the forwarding to GMail.

I saw the first part (servers) but on a different page, the rest of it I did not find.

Rinky dinky outfit, I wouldn't entrust them with a cup of coffee.
