Q: why is the mail application so unreliable?

I have made my move to a Mac laptop this year after being overrun with iOS devices in my house. The MacBook Air I have is an awesome machine. One of the main things I got it for is for business productivity. The simplest of things I should be able to do is communicate over email, but the native mail application is so unreliable it is embarrassing. I have a yahoo account that I was able to setup fine enough. Every time I send an email it is a gamble as to whether or not it is sent or not. That is unacceptable. The mail accounts I setup on my iOS devices seem to be bulletproof and it boggles my mind that the mail client on the Mac OS is so bad. I wasted time with the support lines on several occassions and all they could tell me is tht sometimes after I send an emal it can get stuck in between sending and getting off the yahoo server so there is no record it has been sent and no copy in drafts. What an awful answer. It has gotten to the point where the only way I am confident to use email is on my iPhone or through the web browser on the yahoo site. I am really unhappy about this and would like to know if other people see the same problem.

i have had many problems with OS X Mail for years, on several different MacBook Pros and with various email providers, although mostly Google Mail.

one example: if you watch the Activity pane (you can get it from the Window menu in Mail) you can see A LOT of activity while it checks and syncs various things with google mail.

if you delete an email it goes to trash but you won't be able to clear the trash right away, it needs a couple minutes to finish it's Activity.

similarly, if you take very long composing an email it might get copied to Drafts, and often will remain there even after you have sent it. sometimes you can manually delete it from Drafts, sometimes not. often it will re-appear randomly. same thing with items in the Trash.

It 's actually not just yahoo, I have been having issues with Adobe business catalyst email accounts,  google email accounts,  even iCloud email accounts.  Ive tried everything apple have told me to do and nothing has been fixed, it is safe to say apple mail is rubbish, if you are senting or  expecting important email, use the email domains website to log in.  I know It completely destroy the purpose of apple mail, but that;s what you gotta do , after all its just a free consumer app.

Oh and yes,  apple won't care about whats going on on this "community", its for us users to communicate.

Seeing as how this thread has been dead for a year now, posting your problem which actually appears to be a different problem at the end of it is certainly not the best way to get it noticed. I suggest you start your own thread for your problem.

(more then) Occasionally Mail will mess up headers and content from different emails.

Email will have the header from one email and content from another email.

All I can do is delete Envelope Index files from the maildata folder or if that doesn't work delete the complete mail folder.

    Allan,

I also have an issue of unreliability. I have multiple mail providers which I have set up under apple mail. I originally thought it was my gmail upsetting the mail client, but even after taking it off and just having corporate addresses it still gives nothing but problems. I thought maybe it is to do with apple mail client on the mac not being able to handle multiple addresses and email types eg pop/imap but this did not solve it.

I would like to keep using mac mail client but will also have to abandon it if no solution is found.

You really should start your own thread for your problem.
