I am trying to edit a project originally started on another computer, by someone else and saved onto an external h-drive, but keep getting 'general error 48' when I try to render it to work further. Can anyone help?

I did stuff in this order: copied over all the files from the external h-drive onto my desktop and am now currently trying to render to my internal hard drive. Thanks R
So your are rendering to your system drive?
Do you have sufficient disk space, after copying the other material to the drive?

Yes, I am rendering to my system drive and I have 619 GB free and the project is only about 15 mins long.
Have you tried using Disk Utility to repair your disc permissions?

Just tried disc utility for repairing permissions. Still won't work. Thanks for continuing to offer suggestions tho Meg The Dog! : )
Is this problem only occurring with the project you copied from an external drive, or with any FCP project?
For example, if you were to create a new project, do you still have this problem?
In FCP, if you go to the menu FInal Cut Pro > System Settings and look at the Scratch Disks Tab, is it set where you expect it to be? Have you tried switching the scratch disk to a different disk?

Yes, it is only occuring with the project I saved onto my system hard drive from a other person's hard drive. Normally all of my projects do not have this problem and I can save and work from various external hard drives and the system one too. I did try and set the scratch disc to another external one but this did not help. I don't have access to the other person's hard drive as she had to take it back. My coin t this. May be not relevant at all - just a thougt.
Error -48 dupFNErr Duplicate filename (rename); File found instead of folder
Whatever that can mean in Your situation. I keep 100% of my movie (scratch disks), material etc - in ONE folder on the External Hard Disk. And that keeps me from lot's of strange behaviour.
AND - I need to re-set All Scratch disks to this location EVERYTIME I move this hard disk (to other Mac)

It is possible the project is corrupt, but a couple of questions first:
Did the person that started the project on the other system have trouble rendering it?
Are there still images in the project? If so, are any of them CMYK, instead of RGB?

I will check and see if she had probs rendering. Yes there are still images. Where do I check to see if they are RGB or CMYK? Thanks R
If you don't have Photoshop, then open the image in Preview, and go to the menu Tools > Show Inspector.
On the General Info Tab, it will show the color mode:

Right, they are RGB.
OK, try this. Make a duplicate of your troublesome project file for protection, and go to http://www.digitalrebellion.com/promaintenance/
and download the free trial of Pro Maintenance Tools.
Try Project Repair on the copy of the project you made, and see if that helps.

Thanks for the link! I have checked the project and it has 36 corrupt JPG files in it! What a nightmare. I tried to repair them but with no success : ( Last question now...would you take them out of the file browser and re-import?
