    Just want to update software to

    iOS 5 , have an 8 g

    That doesn't sound like an iPod Classic then.

     

    Try press-and-holding the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time for at least ten seconds. The iPod's screen should go blank, then show the Apple logo, then complete and be okay. It can take four or five minutes to complete this process.

     

    Next time, post your question in the correct forum. When you do that, you will find more people who may know how to answer you. Anyone here, with an iPod Classic, and who has no experience of the iPod Touch that you appear to have, may not know how to assist you.
