Canon Printer "Filter" Error

Got a new Canon all-in-one laser printer (ImageCLASS MF4770n). Installed the drivers from the Canon site, my iMac recognizes the printer.

But when trying to print anything it won't, and when checking the printer cue it keeps showing the same error message that mentions "Filter" -- see below:

I talked to Canon, they say it's a known problem, and the issue is a Mountain Lion issue. Apple has not been able to solve this, so far...

That old HP still working, like a charm...

Okay.

At this stage I would suggest the following actions.

1. Remove the MF47xx from Print & Scan

2. Reset the printing system. This will remove the HP from the Print & Scan pane aswell. So you will also need to add it back later.

3. Trash the CUPS_MF_Printer folder. This is located in /Library/Printers/Canon

4. Repair disk permissions via Disk Utility

5. Restart the Mac

6. Install the MF v1.10 driver and then add the printer.

If this doesn't get the MF4770 printing then contact Canon and ask them to escalate it to Canon INC or replace the Canon with the HP you were looking at.

NOPE....

I did all you suggested... Still same.

Here is the permission repair report, below. YES, THERE WERE ISSUES WITH "PRINTERS" BUT THEY WERE REPAIRED, I CHECKED COUPLE MORE TIMES.... The last issue (JavaApplet plug-in) was actually never repaired, I kept verifying the permission and it kept the same error, even after the repair. But I don't think this has anything to do with my problem...

I also ran the disc verify/repair, so all s.b. good now, but still, my iMac won't print to the Canon.

I'm calling Canon, though my hopes are quite slim....

I think this printer goes back to the store... I don't think at this stage I want to switch to an HP... I have a feeling that it will give me the same results, and these printers are big and heavy, take a long time to set up, too much for carrying back and forth...

Hi Pahu --

i just got this printer (ImageClass MF4770n) and I have 2 macbook pros:

1 works with the printer and 1 doesn't.

They are both on 10.6.8

Both have cups 1.4.7

Can you think of what areas of the 2 computers I can look at to figure out what the differences are?

I've been looking at :

/Library/Printers/Canon

/private/etc/cups

I don't really know what to look for or why it crashes on one computer and not the other.

Can you think of any installed software that might make a difference?

Its definitely crashing in : /Library/Printers/Canon/CUPS_MF_Printer/Bins/capdftopdl

I tried talking to Canon today and they claimed to have never heard of issues with that file.

Thanks for any new ideas!

Is the log saying that the capdftopdl is crashing or cannot be found? Can you provide a bit more of the crash log for this particular job?

And is the MF networked or connected to one Mac and shared to the other?

As for installed software, I've seen the Adobe suite cause this error message. I've also seen Font apps like Suitcase contribute and PDFs created on other systems and then printed on the Mac. But if you are getting this crash with the Apple apps like TextEdit or Safari then this was not common.

And for your information, this file in previous versions of the UFR2 driver has been mentioned in crash logs for several years so the Canon tech probably has had little to do with Mac support.

I purchased this printer yesterday and am getting the same issue. I have tried restarting, re-installing and everything that you've outlined when troubleshooting with mynameismyname but it has not worked. On the Amazon reviews, I saw that someone had posted they had the same problem but had a workaround by installing it as a network printer and now it works.

Do you know how to do this?

"I also experienced issues with getting this printer successfully connecting to Mountain Lion 10.8. I called Canon and they told me to call Apple and that it wasn't their issue. Direct connecting this printer via USB to my MacBook Pro Retina was very problematic - I could get it working, but as soon as I unplugged the USB cable and re-attached it, I'd have to go through initializing the Mac printer system, rebooting, and reinstalling the drivers. I ended up getting this printer working via configuring it as a network printer directly attached to my wireless router. It works fine in this configuration and so far seems to be a great printer for the money."

I would be surprised that simply adding the printer on the network, versus being connected via USB, would stop the filter error.

But if you want to try it, you will need a router, switch or hub. Do you have on of these?

If yes, then you can use a Cat 5 Ethernet cable to connect from the MF to your router. By default, the MF is set to automatically obtain an IP address from the network on power up. So turn off the power to the MF, connect the Ethernet cable between the MF and the router and then power on the MF.

Now you can add the printer to the Mac. From Print & Scan, select to Add and have the Default view selected. The MF should be visible in this view because the MF47xx series supports the Bonjour protocol. Select the MF47xx and the Use menu will automatically select the driver. Click Add to complete the printer creation. Now you can see if this will print without getting the filter error.

I run linux most of the time, but I too have a macbook air and recently purchased the Canon 4770n. I think the problem--on any operating system--is determining whether to use the 4360-4590, 4500w or 4800 series driver. At bottom, there's no magic in a device driver: it's a simple set of instructions and protocols for your computer to communicate with your printer. To reiterate PAHU's point, being listed on Apple's website is solely a reflection of whether Apple will be bothered to take your call about a given printer not working; it says NOTHING about whether the device can or cannot be made to work with your machine's operating system. You might also try http://localhost:631 to remove and reinstall the printer, which is a bit more efficient than using the GUI. From there you can also play around with the various drivers a lot more easily. Good luck.

Hi PAHU,

I have a similar problem. I have a Canon MX395 and it always worked until today. I recently updated to Sierra 10.12, and now when I try to print, it stops and says : "Stopped - 'filter failed'". I tried to reset the printers, to download the last drivers... But it won't print.

What can I do about it?

Thanks a lot
