A workaround is available - once you initiate the playback from YouTube, hit Lock button, not the home button. Then bring up the lock screen's playback controls by hitting the Home button twice. Tap play and it should playback.

One thing - if you let the playback complete, you won't be able to playback again. You must bring up the safari again and go thru the above process. I think we have this problem because the quicktime player will automaticaly exit after playing the entire YouTube clip, which was the case only when you have it active on the foreground pre 6.1. Now it seems like even in the background, it will close the player after letting it play till the end. To prevent that, just tap the rewind button at the lock screen playback controls before the clip finishes.

You are right, which is why I said it's a workaround if all you need is to listen to music. But a better way would be to find an app that can handle this better. (cue from chattphotos response) So I got the Music Tube Free edition app and it works better for my purposes - I can make playlists and cache videos locally so I don't have to download them again. No need to work with the YouTube web app anymore - it seems like they're constantly trying to change their website to prevent this kind of thing.

The workaround is stupid:

Play on safari, lock, double home button, play... THEN don't unlock via lock slider: get a message (email/imessage etc) sent to the device, and unlock from that slider, which should show up as a slideable notification. It'll take you directly to the app, and then you can click home twice (quickly after youre in the app, and sometimes you have to repeat the steps above a few times if it doesnt work) and activate background listening via the multitasking bar... and THEN click home.... and then it works......... ...... sometimes.

.... Apple.

It's extremely stupid and strenuous and you have to do this for every new background video... but it works :/
