ipod corrupt

I have just tried to sync my new ipod classicto my itunes and received the message that it detects that the ipod is corrupt and needs to be restored. When i tried to resotre it it said unknown error...i've only had this ipod for 6 weeks and it has been very well looked after...please help!!! this happened to my old ipod too!
